The Vertical Identity
As J?rat? Markevi?ien? discusses, there are two types of space perceptions: one related to tangibility and physical properties, and the other related to spirituality resulting from individuals' sensing and interactions with space. The elements of our surroundings such as objects, aroma and temperature, construe a defined space of belonging. This phenomenon is difficult to perceive in its pure sense as it is heavily influenced by cultural roots and past experiences. In landscape architecture, association with nature creates a sense of genius loci. It provides a sense of being within nature and more importantly, being in harmony with nature. The concept of the vertical garden system was developed on this genius loci.
