The Vertical Identity
Contact & More Info
Being an international student, Nishat's journey of understanding the Australian identity had started with studying the history and semiotics of its architecture. She visualised that the fabric of Australian society and architecture is homogenous at a larger scale but when observed closely, there are clusters and nodes with surrounding voids. These voids would be the representation of the still prevalent struggle of the Aboriginal population, and gaps among its various communities. While the clusters depict the piercing nature of activities being carried inside the buildings without changing their façade, individual struggles are often concealed in terms of defining national identity, and the closeness of different communities within the larger national confines. The exploration of this concept and the constructed conviction informed the design outcome - a vertical garden (Living Wall System) that can be fixed on to an existing building façade.
