Rapid population growth is a primary cause of India’s booming economy, resulting in increasingly high poverty numbers. The constant spiral of poverty in India expands the magnitude of begging as a social issue. Begging is the consequence of many issues such as poverty, inflation, lack of education, unemployment and religion, leading to an established begging mafia which Amanda's project focuses on.
Amanda's work is a personal response towards organised begging as one of the most visible forms of human trafficking in Mumbai, India. By exploring this powerful theme, Amanda aims to provoke questions concerning the depiction of hardships and the impact of tourism on people’s lives.
By revisiting Amanda's memories, the audience is able to visualise a glimpse of Amanda's past experiences with child beggars in Mumbai.
