Lu MA is interested in finding access to the unconscious world through art, as manifested in her project 'The Uncanny Tarot'. Unlike the majority of tarot artists who rely on painting as a medium, Lu has created her original Major Arcana tarot cards in photo media. Theoretically inspired by Freud’s notion of the Uncanny and Jungian Archetypes, Lu has translated the clues to the unconscious found in psychoanalytical theories into visual forms using surrealist methods. Lu has then imported the uncanny imagery that emerged from her visual translations into the creation of a non-stereotyped tarot deck. While the symbolic essence of the conventional tarot is still retained in her work, Lu also leaves a sense of ambiguity between the forms of a traditional tarot deck and a meditation deck, revealing the unconscious truth accessible to wider audiences.
