Teddy's Space Pants
Tessa Pollock's speculative children’s book ‘Teddy’s Space Pants’ propels the reader into 2050, where the fashion production industry has moved to space and has replaced garment workers with robots. This book aims to generate conversations and awareness in the Australian family home about where clothes come from. The socially isolating environment of space acts as a hyperbole to critique the current and historic exploitation and isolation of workers in the production phase of the fashion industry. Similarly, the robotic characterisation of garment workers in 2050 acts as a metaphor to critique the expected mechanisation of garment factory work.
