‘Emigrant Youth in Australia’ is emotionally motivated by Jamie Chih's personal life experiences and cultural background. Through her work, Jamie aims to express her personal perspectives through art and design in ways that empower viewers and users to resonate and reflect on their own perceptions. Jamie has designed this project to communicate effectively with the general public, especially with the like-minded immigrant community, comprehensively exploring the notions of hybrid identity and acculturation. Drawing from cultural memories of the tea ceremony and traditional material use, Jamie has framed her project as a development of branding design to combine self-value, art, culture and retail into the personal experience. The material of the object allows viewers to experience contrasting textures in a way that actively engages them, inviting viewers to consequently explore the cultural themes Jamie presents.
