Bothering the Limitations of Birth II (detail)
Jac Font’s ambiguous representations of gender identity explore the trappings of expectations regarding gender roles, purposes and desires, and seeks to loosen the stereotypes that bind and limit individuals. Wire is used as a material reference to cages, fences, barriers, and confinement, treated with lace-making techniques that elevate female stories within the conversation about who is in control of the boundaries. Focusing on the breakable body and skin as a fragile border against external systems and influences, the possibility of its penetration becomes a source of both appeal and horror.
