Graduate Exhibition

Austin's work takes inspiration from the phenomenon of constant surveillance facilitated through contemporary technology such as smartphones and social media. The prevalence of conventional surveillance devices, CCTV being the most iconic, and the convenience of new technology and media, has seemingly made us complacent. Whilst surveillance is often justified as protective, this rationale is undermined by blatant ulterior motives, such as the use of new technologies to monitor and listen to users and then sell data to third parties. More than ever, we are unaware who is watching and why, and our ongoing consumption of these products seems to suggest we are unaware of our own commodification.
